Receptionist of the Week

Receptionista: Rachel Jansen from Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Thursday, May 28, 2009

ugh.

Every now and again I decide to try and revitalize my humdrum existance and pretend that I am back in college. Specifically by going out during the week.
I used to be able to stay out past 12 and still manage to get up for my 8 o clock class the next morning. Now I can barely stay up til 10 with out complaining the next morning. So this morning I am double-fisting the coffees this morning and have my eye drops within arms reach in order to feign alertness, my college self would be so disappointed.

But now that I think about it, in college I would stay out past 12, wake up to the alarm, hit the snooze and ditch class that morning.

In regards to the celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, etc. in no way is it necessary to celebrate with cupcakes the size of Whoppers.  This is simply leading obesity in the work place and I think it should stop.

No worker can resist a cupcake at 3 in the afternoon when will power is at its weakest.  It is just rude, and wrong to put us through such torture.

Especially when something so delicious is served without coffee.

Best Regards,

An Ode to Business Casual

O, business casual you are so refined,
Your unisex shape and lack of any real style
It is easy for me to not have tri-ed.
Morning, - I rummage thru my clothes pile;
Unfitted button downs and sweater vests,
Wrinkled slacks and pullovers from Target.
In fact, i have become quite resourceful
T-shirt with strapless dress a la Clueless,
Short skirt with tights becomes appropriate
Because of you, dear, business casual.
Work.

I have been working as a receptionist for the past nine months, for the last four of those months I have been half-actively applying for new jobs, and half-trying to accept my fate as a receptionist.

I graduated from college a year ago with a degree in international business. Since I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and with the gloom of a soon-to-be recession I took the first job I got. That’s how I got here. To my little cubicle where I contemplate my breakout from the monotony of ringing phones, 3 gray slightly-padded walls and having to be awake and cheery at a awful time in the morning in order to greet those who make 3xs(probably more) what I do.

But enough bitching.
This is me trying to climb out of my hole and manage my career (or lack there of) and social life in style, and preferably with money left over.
